Introduction

Hello and welcome to WikiProject Software, a collaboration area and open group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of software articles. If you are interested please feel free to add your name to our list of participants.

For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.

Goals and scope

Goals

The project aims primarily to improve:

Scope

WikiProject Software is a collection of pages devoted to the management of computer software articles on Wikipedia. We aim to help set up standards of organization and presentation for articles on:

  • Software
  • Software Vulnerabilities and Exploitation (Viruses, Adware, Spyware, etc.)
  • Software Security tools
  • Information Security issues
  • Free Software

Things to keep in mind

There are a few things that you should try to keep in mind while editing software articles.

Audience

One of the primary goals of this project is to make computer science articles accessible, so you should make an effort to explain any jargon.

Conventions

References

Try to ensure that every computer science article includes at least a few relevant references, and direct citations for anything that could be considered controversial. Wikipedia articles cannot be a substitute for a textbook (that is what Wikibooks is for), and references can give readers some idea of where they should go if they need more information than the article can provide. Just as important, providing further reading enables other editors to verify and to extend the given information, as well as to discuss the quality of a particular source.

You can find more information on citations and references, as well as several examples for how the cited literature should look, in the style guide on citations. Wikipedia's List of publications in computer science can be a good source of references and citations for computer science articles, as can Citeseer and Google Scholar.

Announcement

Announcement
  • Software Wikia is a wiki specialised on software using semantic extras. If a nice article does not have the required Wikipedia:Notability, simply export it and ask an admin for an import there.
  • WikiProject Free Software is now merged with WikiProject Software. The link to WikiProject Free Software is Wikipedia:WikiProject Software/Free Software.
  • To better serve Wikipedia, WikiProject Malware is now under the parent of WikiProject Computer Security. All Malware articles are currently being transferred over to the new project. In any case, you are welcome to join at WikiProject Computer Security!
  • All members of WikiProject Software are urged to install the Centralized Announcement System on their talk page.
  • I have changed the participant (members) table by replacing the Task column with Area of Expertise. I also introduced a new template based status system so as to "arrange" the members according to whether they are active, semi-active, inactive, or retired. Please update your entry accordingly.
  • New IRC server! The old channel on Freenode is not used anymore. See See here. Manual for using IRC can be found here for why. Find us at:
