Hypnotherapy, also known as hypnotic medicine,[1] is the use of hypnosis in psychotherapy.[2] Hypnotherapy is generally not considered to be based on scientific evidence, and is rarely recommended in clinical practice guidelines.[3] Hypnotherapy is often categorised as a type of alternative medicine[4] However, several psychological reviews and meta-analyses suggest that hypnotherapy can be effective as an adjunctive treatment for a number of disorders, including chronic and acute pain, irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, and some eating disorders.[5]
