Physical education is an academic subject taught in primary and secondary schools across the world. It is often referred to as Phys. Ed. or PE, and in the United States it is informally called gym class or gym. The content of physical education is generally organised around health, movement and physical activity.[1] Unlike other academic subjects, physical education is distinctive because it engages students across the psychomotor, cognitive, affective, social and cultural domains of learning.[2] Physical education content differs internationally, as the types of physical activities emphasised often reflect the geographic, cultural and environmental features of each region.[3] Although there is ongoing debate about the purpose of physical education, it is widely accepted that one of its central goals is to socialise and empower young people to value and participate in diverse movement and physical activity cultures.[2][4][5][6]
