The Russian naval facility in Tartus is a leased military installation of the Russian Navy located on the northern edge of the sea port of the Syrian city of Tartus. Up until 2017, Russian official usage classified the installation as a Material-Technical Support Point (Russian: Пункт Mатериально-Tехнического Oбеспечения, ПМТО) and not as a base. As of 2012[update], Tartus is the Russian Navy's only Mediterranean repair and replenishment point.[4]
As of 13 December 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime, Russia's continued military presence in the base remains uncertain.[5][6][7][8] On 11 December, it was reported that many of the Russian vessels previously in the harbour at Tartus had left and were -at least temporarily- offshore, some nearby.[9] As of 9 January 2025[update], offshore Russian naval ships were apparently awaiting evacuation from the base.[10][11] On 20 January 2025, the new Syrian government terminated a contract with a Russian company that had managed the port of Tartus (in which the naval base is located) since 2019.[12][13]
