AssessmentUK Politics Assessment

Welcome to the project page of the Politics of the United Kingdom WikiProject! The project is made up of a group of editors who are interested in British politics, and who would like to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of the subject. We create, revise and refurbish all kinds of articles within the project scope, which is listed below. Please feel free to help out, and join our project, if you wish.

Just add your name to the roster below, and get to editing!

Overview[edit]

See also project scope.

This project is intended to cover all aspects of Politics and Government within the United Kingdom. Given the broad range of topics that fall within this scope, there are several areas of overlap with similar projects (such as WikiProject UK Parliament constituencies).

Where a subject is already supported by a more focussed project or work group, the more focussed project should take the lead. This project will act in a support role for the more focussed projects and attempt to provide co-ordination between projects when necessary.

Suggestions are a great way to voice opinions!

If a more focussed project does not exist for a subject (or where the focussed project becomes inactive), this project will take direct responsibility for that subject.

Timeline scope[edit]

The project should cover the period from the creation of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707, through the integration of Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801, to the modern day. Articles relating to politics or government in England, Scotland or Wales before 1707 should only be adopted by the project if there was a continued effect on politics or government after the union. Likewise, articles relating to politics or government in Ireland before 1801 should only be adopted by the project if there was a continued effect on politics or government after the union.

Articles relating to the Republic of Ireland should not be adopted by this project unless they have a direct bearing on UK politics or government. Special care should be taken in adopting articles about Ireland around the 1920s; the Irish Free State was set up in 1922 but the UK's name wasn't changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland until 1927. If you are in doubt on whether an article should be adopted please discuss it on the talk page of this project first.

General maintenance work

  • Political make-up of local councils in the United Kingdom is a high-maintenance but high-importance page. A proposal: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom/Archive 8#Adopt a council! (a project proposal). Cheers! FLYING CHRYSALIS 💬 11:55, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Expand coverage of articles in Category:Results of United Kingdom general elections by parliamentary constituency so that they reach the fullest extent, and reformat the existing articles to one massive table each. FoxyGrampa75 (talk) 00:24, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Add sources to Unreferenced BLPs.
  • Expand any of our stub articles.
  • Particularly for former MPs who have short (stub) articles. Who's Who is a good place to find basic information for adding to an article - it may be available online for free via your local library.—TrottieTrue (talk) 12:08, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Identify pages that need infoboxes by adding |needs-infobox=yes to the project banner.
  • All MPs past and present should have infoboxes - this is mainly an issue for those who served several decades ago or longer
  • Add infoboxes to any articles appearing in this category.
  • Correct any infoboxes which don't have "Member of Parliament” hyperlinked at the top. This seems to have occurred because "constituencyMP" is used as a field instead of "office". Replace "constituencyMP" with | office = [[Member of Parliament (UK)|Member of Parliament]]<br />for [[seat name (UK Parliament constituency)|seat name]]. Remember to number "office" if the person has multiple offices in the box.
  • Check this category for any articles requiring urgent attention.
  • Add {{WP UK Politics}} to all talk pages within the project scope.
  • Assess the quality of all our unassessed articles
  • Identify pages that need images by adding |needs-picture=yes to the project banner.
  • Find images for any articles listed in this category.
  • Historical local election results are lacking from many articles. I've added 2014 and 2018 results for Westminster City Council, but there's virtually nothing pre-dating that for Westminster. It seems quite hit and miss as to whether historical results will be available for other councils. I think metropolitan boroughs (ie. London and Manchester) are often covered more comprehensively - Islington has results for 1998, I think. These historic results are often of interest for the high-profile figures who contested those elections. Local election results for years gone by are available online (Andrew Teale, Elections Centre and the London Datastore sites being notable sources) and could be transcribed here. I think the London councils might be a first goal to complete.--TrottieTrue (talk) 01:11, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Add referenced dates of birth from reliable sources for serving MPs etc - a number of MPs elected in 2019 have no DOB on their article.
  • Add referenced dates of birth from reliable sources to the article List of living former United Kingdom MPs, also checking the subject's article has a citation for the DOB.
